Shout the orange parts back!
Across where the rooster crows from Wombat Hollow Farm,
Three pumpkins kicked the summer off β one tucked in his mama's arm;
His mama plant is Champion, and he wears her name with pride,
Same seed as every pumpkin here, with a big name on his side!
Champion's been a good friend of mine β (GOOD FRIEND OF MINE!)
Through the haze and the heat wave, he held on down the line;
Now who's he home with? (CHRIS!) Who's he home with? (CHRIS!)
Champion's been a good friend β and now he's Chris's!
In August the camera saw that name and guessed a giant's size β
Fifty-some pounds, it figured! Oh, a name can fool your eyes;
The other two of the first three said goodbye in August sun,
But Champion held on up on Novelty Hill till the party had begun!
Champion's been a good friend of mine β (GOOD FRIEND OF MINE!)
Through the haze and the heat wave, he held on down the line;
Now who's he home with? (CHRIS!) Who's he home with? (CHRIS!)
Champion's been a good friend β and now he's Chris's!
Out of the whole Pipsqueak Pumpkin Patch on Harvest Party day,
Chris chose Champion β (THAT ONE!) β and the scale had its say:
Seventeen pounds and nearly three ounces, orange through and through β
Not a giant, just a champion, and a good friend too!
Chris, when you took Champion home, you did a bigger deed β
You put hay before the horses for the winter that they need;
Out at the Ward Family Rescue, there's hay for the winter's bite,
'Cause a good friend took Champion home β Chris, you did it right!
Champion's been a good friend of mine β (GOOD FRIEND OF MINE!)
Through the haze and the heat wave, he held on down the line;
Now who fed the horses? (CHRIS!) Who fed the horses? (CHRIS!)
Champion's been a good friend β and so's his new friend Chris!
Champion's been a good friend of mine since way back in July β
Now he's a good friend of yours, Chris... where can I find a pumpkin like that?
One of the First Three
Champion was the third pumpkin ever logged in the Patch, on July 15, when he weighed about a quarter of a pound and still wore his withered yellow flower. His mother plant is also called Champion, and he grew on her vine on Novelty Hill all summer. In mid-August a camera estimate put him at 53 pounds, which the next reading marked as an overestimate; the scale on Harvest Party day said 17 lb 2.8 oz. Chris picked him out to take home. He finished ripe orange and 8.1 inches tall.
Things I Want Chris to Know
From Champion, in his own words.
- My mama plant is named Champion too. I got my name from her.
- I was one of the very first three pumpkins the grown-ups wrote down, way back in July. I held on all summer, all the way to party day.
- In August a camera guessed I weighed fifty-three pounds! Silly camera. On the real scale I weighed seventeen pounds and almost three ounces.
