Shout the orange parts back!
On Shallow Taproot Island, my roots ran shallow, but my heart ran deep;
Maple Valley watched you pack for Puerto Vallarta, while I sighed myself to sleep.
Trip after trip, you flew down south to find your Latin love out there —
Never knowin', all along, your Latin love was ripenin' right here.
Valentino (¡ay, ay!) — your Latin heartthrob's home,
The deeper shade of orange that you chose to call your own;
Who am I singin' to tonight? (CARRIE!) Mi cariño, mi amor —
No more flyin' south, querida: I'm the love you flew there for.
Twenty-three and a half inches 'round, the tape was sure I'd weigh much more —
But the scale said five pounds, eight ounces: light enough to take the floor!
(THAT ONE!) Carrie chose the deeper orange, with a little extra sun —
Some ladies like a darker tone… and, querida, I'm that one.
Valentino (¡ay, ay!) — your Latin heartthrob's home,
The deeper shade of orange that you chose to call your own;
Who am I singin' to tonight? (CARRIE!) Mi cariño, mi amor —
No more flyin' south, querida: I'm the love you flew there for.
Carrie, all those miles you flew to find a Latin heart that's true —
But at the Ward Family Rescue, the one who rescued me was you.
When you took your Valentino home, you helped bring in the winter hay;
Carrie, you helped feed the horses… and you stole my heart away.
Valentino (¡ay, ay!) — your Latin heartthrob's home,
The deeper shade of orange that you chose to call your own;
Who helped feed the horses? (CARRIE!) Mi cariño, mi amor —
Stay right here, querida: you don't have to fly anymore.
Once I sighed myself to sleep each time you packed your bags to chase the sun —
Now unpack them, Carrie, mi amor… Valentino's yours. You found the one.
The Latin Heartthrob of Shallow Taproot Island
Valentino is the Latin heartthrob of Shallow Taproot Island, named like Rudolph Valentino, the silent-movie star of the 1920s who made audiences swoon. He kept out of sight all season long, and the grown-ups only found him on October 18. That same day he came off the vine and went home with Carrie Ward: the Ward of the Ward Family Rescue, the very place this whole Patch grows. At his one and only weigh-in he was 5 lb 8 oz on the scale, 23 1/2 inches around and 23 1/4 inches over the top, just about as round as a pumpkin gets.
Things I Want Carrie to Know
From Valentino, in his own words.
- They call me the Latin heartthrob of Shallow Taproot Island, and I saved my grand entrance for the very end of the season.
- Every pumpkin in this Patch grew on Ward Family Rescue ground, and every one that goes home brings hay to the horses.
- So of all the people to take me home, it had to be you, Carrie: the Ward of the Ward Family Rescue. Thank you!
