Shout the orange parts back!
Up on West Novelty Hill, where the big leaves hid the ground,
A pumpkin grew in secret β not a peep, not a sound.
The first time anybody measured her, she was gold with a blush of green β (TA-DA!)
Like a rabbit from a hat, the brightest trick you've ever seen!
Magic! (TA-DA!) Golden as a lantern's glow,
A little bit of sunshine for a town that sparkles in the snow.
Who picked her out? (JAN!)
Whose is she now? (JAN!)
(Shh... abracadabra...)
Magic's home with Jan.
Then the frost came in at midnight β just a little taste of snow β
Cowboy Pinoy spread blankets twice before the sun went low.
Out where Maxwell Road curves, she came through it golden still,
And she weighed three pounds, fourteen ounces! (TA-DA!)
The gold of Novelty Hill.
Magic! (TA-DA!) Golden as a lantern's glow,
A little bit of sunshine for a town that sparkles in the snow.
Who picked her out? (JAN!)
Whose is she now? (JAN!)
(Shh... abracadabra...)
Magic's home with Jan.
The day the Pipsqueak Pumpkin Patch said, Neighbors, come and play!
Elli brought her friend Jan down from the mountains far away.
She knows snowy sleigh-ride magic, and the castle fireworks' glow,
So Jan pointed straight at Magic β (THAT ONE!) β sittin' gold and low.
Jan, you grew up 'round the horses that your folks raised in the desert sun,
So you know that feedin' horses is a job that's never done.
When you took your Magic home, the Ward Family Rescue horses got their hay β (NEIGH! NEIGH!)
Now they'll munch on golden sunshine through the coldest winter day.
Magic! (TA-DA!) Golden as a lantern's glow,
A little bit of sunshine for a town that sparkles in the snow.
Who fed the horses? (JAN!)
Who stacked the hay up? (JAN!)
(Shh... abracadabra...)
TA-DA! That's the real magic, Jan.
She grew in secret on the hill, where the big leaves hid the ground β
Now, Jan, she's yours, all glowin' gold where the Leavenworth snow comes down.
We keep believinβ - you two are Magic
The Golden Secret of Novelty Hill
Magic was first found on August 26 on the west side of Novelty Hill, tucked under the big leaves: a bright yellow ball on a thick, fuzzy stem. She was named for that sunny yellow, which seemed to appear in the Patch like magic. By September 11 she had turned a bright golden yellow with a lime-green blush at her blossom end. When the October frosts came, the keeper covered the vines with blankets, and she came through golden. On October 18, the day the Patch opened its gate to the Hobart community, Jan came along with her friend Elli and chose Magic. At her final weigh-in she was 3 lb 14 oz on the scale, 21 7/8 inches around and 20 1/8 inches over the top.
Things I Want Jan to Know
From Magic, in her own words.
- When the grown-ups first found me, I was hiding under the big leaves on Novelty Hill, a little yellow ball nobody knew was there. Now you see me!
- When the frost came, the keeper tucked blankets over my vine. I stayed golden the whole way through.
- You grew up around horses, Jan, so you know they always need their hay. Now I get to go home with you to a snowy mountain town of twinkly lights and sleigh rides. Thank you, Jan!
