Shout the orange parts back!
Up on Warrior Hill, the grass grew tall —
Shades was three inches wide. That's all.
Across where the rooster crows from Wombat Hollow Farm,
He leaned up toward the sunshine. Kept his cool. Kept his charm.
Stay cool! (BAP-BAP!) Keep your shades on tight —
Shades played it cool, and it all turned out right.
Who said "That one"? (BARBIE!) Who's he hangin' with? (BARBIE!)
(BAP-BAP!) Shades is home with Barbie now.
The Harvest Party came. The Harvest Party went.
Shades stayed in the Pipsqueak Pumpkin Patch — and he was cool with how it went.
Didn't make a fuss. Didn't make a sound.
Just kept on growin' slow, 'cause his day was comin' round.
Stay cool! (BAP-BAP!) Keep your shades on tight —
Shades played it cool, and it all turned out right.
Who said "That one"? (BARBIE!) Who's he hangin' with? (BARBIE!)
(BAP-BAP!) Shades is home with Barbie now.
Then the Mombats walked the patch, a warm south wind, the sun peekin' through —
Barbie led the crew: a nurse, line dancin', hoedown, karaoke too.
Barbie looked at Shades — (THAT ONE!) — and that's all you need to know,
And she kept on tellin' the Cowboy Pinoy: "Ma-RAH-ming sa-LAH-mat, po!"
Barbie, you're a nurse — takin' care is what you do,
And at the Ward Family Rescue, the horses got some care from you!
So when the winter wind comes blowin' (WHOO-OOO!) and the hill turns cold and gray,
The horses will have hay. Thanks to you. (OKAY!)
Stay cool! (BAP-BAP!) Keep your shades on tight —
Shades played it cool, and it all turned out right.
Who said "That one"? (BARBIE!) Who took care of the horses? (BARBIE!)
(BAP-BAP!) Ma-RAH-ming sa-LAH-mat po, Barbie!
He was three inches wide, way down low in the grass —
Now he's six pounds and four ounces... and Barbie, he's yours. (Stay cool.)
The Coolest on Warrior Hill
Shades was first logged on August 10 on Warrior Hill: a dark green ball about three inches across, down low in the tall grass and leaning up toward the sun. Nobody ever found which vine he came from. He is named for Shades, the drummer in the movie "That Thing You Do!", the one who plays it cool when things don't go his way and still finds the love of his life in the end. The Harvest Party came and went, and Shades stayed in the Patch, quietly growing. On October 16, the patch walk-through day, Barbie looked at him and said, "That one." At his final weigh-in the scale said 6 lb 4 oz, and he measured 27 inches around and 24 inches over the top.
Things I Want Barbie to Know
From Shades, in his own words.
- When the grown-ups first found me, I was only three inches wide, way down low in the tall grass on Warrior Hill. I leaned up toward the sun and kept my cool.
- The Harvest Party came and went, and I stayed right where I was. No fuss. I just kept on growing, because I knew my day was coming.
- Then you walked the Patch, looked right at me and said, "That one." You take care of people every day, Barbie, and now you get to take care of me. Maraming salamat po!
