The Late Sunrise of the Perimeter
Sunny was a late arrival. He was first logged on August 23, about three inches across, out on the Perimeter. In four days at the end of August he went from baseball-sized to grapefruit-round, and every check-up found him bright green. On Harvest Party day he showed up orange, and Mel picked him out to take home. At his final weigh-in he was 6 lb 5.4 oz on the scale, 28 inches around and 5 inches tall: wider than he is tall, like a sun sitting down.

- When the grown-ups first found me, I was about as big as a baseball. Then, in just four days, I grew as big as a grapefruit!
- I came along late. I only had six weeks until the party, and I still went from green all the way to orange.
- On the big scale I weighed six pounds and five ounces. I am wider than I am tall, so I sit nice and flat. I will not roll away from you.
